Description
Lecea Reserve | DO Rioja, Spain
Lecea Reserva is a beautifully traditional Rioja crafted by Bodegas Lecea in the historic village of San Asensio , Rioja Alta. Produced exclusively from 100% Tempranillo , the wine reflects the winery’s commitment to preserving authentic Rioja winemaking traditions while expressing the elegance and freshness that defines classic Rioja Alta wines.
The grapes come from carefully selected family vineyards planted on limestone-clay soils surrounding San Asensio, where Atlantic influence helps preserve natural acidity and aromatic finesse. The vineyards are cultivated using traditional methods and harvested manually to ensure careful fruit selection.
Following fermentation, the wine undergoes extended aging in oak barrels before continuing its evolution in the extraordinary 16th-century underground caves (calados) beneath the winery. These historic tunnels maintain naturally cool and humid conditions, allowing the wine to mature slowly and gracefully while developing complexity and refinement.
On the nose, Lecea Reserva reveals aromas of ripe black cherry, dried plum and forest berries layered with cedar, tobacco leaf, leather, balsamic notes and sweet spice. The palate is elegant, savory and beautifully polished with silky mature tannins, vibrant acidity and a long persistent finish marked by classic Rioja finesse rather than excessive oak or power.
This is traditional Rioja Reserva at its purest — refined, balanced and deeply connected to the heritage of Rioja Alta.

About the Producer
Bodegas Lecea is a historic family winery located in the legendary Barrio de las Bodegas in San Asensio , Rioja Alta. For generations, the Lecea family has dedicated itself to preserving traditional Rioja winemaking methods and the historic culture of the region.
One of the winery’s defining features is its incredible network of more than 300 meters of underground caves and cellars dating back to the 16th century , carved beneath San Asensio and still actively used today for wine aging. These naturally cool and humid tunnels allow wines to mature slowly and elegantly while preserving freshness and balance.
Bodegas Lecea continues to use traditional practices including manual grape handling, concrete fermentation tanks and restrained oak aging designed to maintain vineyard expression and authenticity rather than overpowering the wines with excessive extraction or heavy barrel influence.
Today the winery is led by siblings Luis, Jorge, Estela and Lidia Lecea , who combine deep respect for Rioja heritage with a more artisan and personal approach to winemaking. Their wines focus on elegance, freshness and expressing the identity of San Asensio terroir.
Lecea Reserva perfectly reflects this philosophy — classic Rioja with authenticity, patience and soul.
