Description

Lecea Gran Reserva | DO Rioja, Spain

Lecea Gran Reserva is one of the most classic and elegant wines produced by Bodegas Lecea, crafted in the historic village of San Asensio in Rioja Alta. Made exclusively from 100% Tempranillo, this wine reflects the winery’s dedication to preserving authentic Rioja traditions through extended ageing, manual vineyard work and slow maturation inside centuries-old underground caves.

The grapes come from carefully selected family-owned vineyards planted on limestone-clay soils around San Asensio, where Atlantic influence helps maintain freshness, acidity and aromatic precision. The vineyards are harvested manually and vinified using traditional methods focused on elegance and balance rather than heavy extraction.

Following fermentation, the wine undergoes long ageing in oak barrels before continuing its slow evolution in the remarkable 16th-century underground calados beneath the winery. These historic caves naturally maintain cool temperatures and humidity, allowing the wine to mature gracefully while preserving freshness and refining texture.

On the nose, Lecea Gran Reserva reveals complex aromas of dried black cherry, fig, tobacco leaf, cedarwood, leather, balsamic notes and delicate sweet spice. The palate is silky, savoury and deeply elegant with mature tannins, beautifully integrated oak and a long persistent finish full of classic Rioja character.

This is traditional Rioja at its most refined — mature, complex and beautifully balanced with remarkable finesse and authenticity.

A beautifully mature Rioja Gran Reserva that captures the elegance, patience and authenticity of traditional Rioja Alta winemaking.

About the Producer

Bodegas Lecea is a historic family winery located in the legendary Barrio de las Bodegas in San Asensio, Rioja Alta. For generations, the Lecea family has preserved the traditional winemaking culture of Rioja while continuing to craft wines rooted deeply in local history and terroir.

The winery is famous for its extraordinary network of more than 300 metres of underground caves and calados dating back to the 16th century, still actively used today for ageing wines under naturally stable humidity and temperature conditions. These caves form an essential part of the winery’s identity and contribute significantly to the elegant ageing of their wines.

Bodegas Lecea continues to work with traditional methods including manual grape handling, restrained oak ageing and fermentation techniques designed to preserve freshness, vineyard identity and balance rather than overpowering wines with excessive extraction or oak.

Today the winery is led by siblings Luis, Jorge, Estela and Lidia Lecea, who combine respect for Rioja heritage with an artisan and personal approach to winemaking. Their wines focus on authenticity, elegance and expressing the unique character of San Asensio.

Lecea Gran Reserva perfectly reflects this philosophy — timeless Rioja with depth, elegance and soul.
