Cuatro Gatos is a serious Cabernet Sauvignon with a distinctly Spanish personality. Made by Vega Tolosa from grapes grown in their own La Lincha vineyard in Manchuela, it combines ripe, generous fruit with the structure and depth you expect from Cabernet Sauvignon.

The vineyard was planted in 1998, and the grapes are organically grown in the distinctive landscape of Manchuela. The wine spends time in French oak, adding warmth and complexity without losing the ripe fruit at its heart.

In the glass, it is deep and intense, with ripe red fruit followed by notes of coffee, toast and toffee. It has plenty of character, but this isn’t a Cabernet that feels hard or overly serious — the ripe fruit and smooth texture make it very easy to enjoy.

If you enjoy fuller Spanish reds but fancy stepping away from the usual Tempranillo, this is a great bottle to try. Cabernet Sauvignon may be an international grape, but here it has been given a very convincing Manchuela accent.

About the Producer

Vega Tolosa is a family winery based in Casas-Ibáñez, Albacete, in the heart of DO Manchuela. The family has a long history of viticulture in the region and today works with both Manchuela’s native varieties and international grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Sauvignon Blanc.

Their vineyards are farmed organically, with the winery placing particular emphasis on expressing the character of its land while protecting it for future generations. Bobal remains at the heart of Vega Tolosa, but wines such as Cuatro Gatos show how successfully international varieties can adapt to Manchuela’s climate and landscape.

Cuatro Gatos is one of the winery’s “vino de autor” projects, created from the La Lincha Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard. The wine has also earned international recognition, including medals at Ecovino, Wine Up! and the Concours Mondial de Bruxelle
