Description
Piedras Coloradas | DO Almansa, Spain
Organic
Vegan
If you have never tried Garnacha Tintorera, Piedras Coloradas is a brilliant introduction to this rather unusual grape.
Unlike most red varieties, Garnacha Tintorera has coloured flesh as well as dark skins, which explains the wonderfully deep colour in the glass. But don’t mistake colour for heaviness — Piedras Coloradas is surprisingly fresh, smooth and easy to drink.
The grapes come from high-altitude vineyards around Higueruela, close to 1,000 meters above sea level. The extreme conditions and altitude help retain freshness, giving the ripe fruit a lovely lift.
Expect plenty of ripe blackberry, plum and dark cherry, with a touch of spice and gentle toasted notes. Three months in American oak adds just enough roundness and complexity before the wine is refined in concrete tanks, keeping the fruit bright and lively.
The result is a deeply coloured but very approachable red — juicy, smooth, fresh and incredibly versatile at the table.

About the Producer
Tintoralba is based in Higueruela, Albacete, in the heart of DO Almansa. The project was created in 2004 within the Santa Quiteria cooperative with a very clear purpose: to show what Garnacha Tintorera can achieve in this extraordinary high-altitude landscape.
Higueruela sits at around 1,000 meters above sea level, with some Tintoralba vineyards exceeding 1,000 meters. The combination of altitude, limestone-rich sandy soils and extreme temperatures produces naturally low yields and helps the grapes retain freshness despite the intense Spanish sunshine.
Garnacha Tintorera is the star here. Also known internationally as Alicante Bouschet, it is unusual because both its skin and its flesh are pigmented, producing naturally deep-coloured wines. Although the grape originated in France, it has become so well established around Almansa that it is now one of the region’s defining varieties.
Piedras Coloradas belongs to Tintoralba’s Alquería range, made from the highest-altitude organic vineyards around Higueruela. The winery works with minimal intervention, with a focus on retaining the natural freshness and character of Garnacha Tintorera.
For Piedras Coloradas, malolactic fermentation takes place in American oak, followed by three months in barrel and further refinement in concrete. It’s a clever combination: enough oak to soften and round the wine, but not enough to bury that delicious Garnacha Tintorera fruit.
