Description

La Casica del Abuelo | DO Alicante, Spain

🌿 Organic   🌱 Vegan

La Casica del Abuelo is exactly the sort of Mediterranean red you can open without overthinking it — juicy, smooth and full of ripe fruit, with enough character to keep things interesting.

Monastrell takes the lead, joined by Garnacha and Syrah. Together they give the wine plenty of ripe blackberry and plum, with hints of red fruit, rosemary, thyme and a gentle balsamic freshness.

On the palate, it is fresh, fruity and beautifully approachable. The tannins are ripe and smooth, the acidity keeps everything lively and a short period in oak adds a little spice and roundness without taking over the fruit.

It’s unmistakably Mediterranean but not big or heavy. This is an easy-going red for tapas, a plate of charcuterie, grilled meat or simply a glass at the end of the day.

About the Producer

Casa Balaguer is based around Finca Puerto de la Harina near Villena, Alicante, on the slopes of Sierra Salinas.

The name La Casica del Abuelo comes directly from the estate. It refers to the small agricultural house at Puerto de la Harina, built in 1932, and the wine was named in honour of that piece of the property’s history.

The vineyards sit between approximately 550 and 700 meters, surrounded by mountains. Although this is Mediterranean country, the altitude and inland location bring a strong continental influence, including cold winters and significant differences between daytime and nighttime temperatures.

Monastrell is naturally the heart of La Casica del Abuelo. The estate’s older Monastrell vines bring ripe Mediterranean fruit and character, while Garnacha and Syrah round out the blend.

The grapes are hand harvested, and the winemaking is designed to produce something approachable rather than overly extracted — a red with plenty of fruit, Mediterranean personality and, most importantly, genuine drinkability.
