Gran Prínceps is a rich and elegant organic red from Canals & Munné, combining ripe black fruit, Mediterranean character and beautifully integrated oak with a long, structured finish.

Made from an equal blend of Garnacha Negra and Samsó, it brings together the generous fruit of Garnacha with the structure and depth of Samsó. The result is full of character, but still polished and very easy to enjoy.

The grapes undergo a long maceration to extract colour, flavour and tannins. The wine then spends 12 months in 225-litre American and Allier oak barrels, followed by a minimum of 24 months ageing in bottle before release.

In the glass, dark fruit takes centre stage. The oak ageing adds warmth and complexity, while time in bottle brings everything together. It is generous and structured, with mature nuances and a long finish. The winery also considers it a wine capable of developing further in bottle.

A lovely choice when you want a serious Penedès red with maturity and depth, rather than something simply young and fruity.

About the Producer

Canals & Munné is a family winery based in Sant Sadurní d’Anoia, at the heart of Penedès. Its history stretches back to 1915, and the Canals family has continued the winemaking tradition across several generations.

Although particularly well known for its sparkling wines, Canals & Munné also produces a range of still wines. Gran Prínceps sits within the winery’s premium range, alongside wines such as its Priorat Reserva and 1915 by C&M.

Gran Prínceps is particularly interesting because its present-day blend focuses entirely on two traditional Mediterranean varieties: Garnacha Negra and Samsó. Earlier versions of this wine used a very different blend, but Canals & Munné subsequently changed its composition. The current 50/50 Garnacha–Samsó blend gives the wine a much more distinctly Catalan identity.

The winery also gives Gran Prínceps unusually generous maturation for a wine at this level: a year in oak followed by at least another two years in bottle before release.
