Description

Casa Castillo Monastrell | DO Jumilla, Spain

🌿 Organic   🌱 Vegan

Casa Castillo Monastrell is the kind of wine that makes you look at Jumilla in a completely different way. It has all the ripe Mediterranean fruit you expect from Monastrell, but without becoming heavy or overdone.

The fruit comes from Casa Castillo’s own organically farmed vineyards. Dry conditions, limestone-rich soils and the altitude of the estate help produce ripe grapes while preserving freshness.

In the glass, there is plenty of blackberry, plum and juicy red fruit, followed by Mediterranean herbs, spice and a subtle balsamic character.

The palate is smooth and wonderfully juicy. The tannins are gentle, the fruit stays bright and the oak sits quietly in the background. There’s enough structure for food, but this is certainly not one of those Jumilla reds you need to wrestle with.

Serve it just a little cooler than you might expect. At around 14–16°C, that fresh, juicy side of Monastrell really comes alive.

💎 Why We Love It

Everything we want from modern Jumilla. Ripe and Mediterranean, yet fresh, juicy and incredibly drinkable — Monastrell without unnecessary heaviness.

About the Producer

Casa Castillo is one of the wineries that helped change the reputation of Jumilla and show just how elegant Monastrell can be.

The story of the estate began in 1941, when José Sánchez-Cerezo acquired Finca Casa Castillo. Vineyards were already part of the property, although for many years the grapes were sold rather than made into wine at the estate.

That changed in the early 1990s. The old winery was restored and the family began producing wines from its own vineyards, with Monastrell firmly at the centre of the project.

Today, Casa Castillo has around 170 hectares of vineyards within a much larger Mediterranean estate. Almond and olive trees share the landscape with the vines, creating a wonderfully traditional setting.

The vineyards sit at around 700 meters altitude and are traditionally dry-farmed. The soils are particularly well suited to Monastrell, with limestone playing an important role.

The entire vineyard area is certified organic, and the approach in the cellar is equally restrained. Native yeasts, careful extraction and larger or previously used wooden vessels allow the fruit and vineyard to remain the focus.

Casa Castillo doesn’t try to make Monastrell taste like an international red. Instead, the wines celebrate exactly what this corner of Jumilla can do: Mediterranean fruit, herbs, warmth and sunshine — balanced by freshness and beautiful drinkability.
