Description
Chaveo Viñas Viejas Monastrell | DO Bullas, Spain
Organic
Vegan
Chaveo Viñas Viejas is a beautiful example of what Monastrell can become when it comes from old vines grown high in the hills of Bullas. Made by Bodega Monastrell, this is a single-parcel wine from the Valle del Aceniche, one of the most distinctive vineyard areas of the region.
Forget the idea that Monastrell always has to be huge, heavy and alcoholic. Chaveo has plenty of ripe Mediterranean fruit and structure, but the altitude brings a freshness that keeps everything beautifully balanced. You get ripe blackberry and dark cherry, Mediterranean herbs and spice, with a subtle savoury character underneath.
There’s real concentration here, but also elegance. The old vines give the wine depth and intensity, while the freshness makes it surprisingly easy to drink. It’s the sort of red that feels serious without becoming hard work — excellent with food, but equally good when you simply want a really good glass of Spanish red.
For anyone who normally reaches automatically for Rioja or Ribera del Duero, Chaveo is exactly the kind of bottle we like putting in front of them. Monastrell from Bullas deserves far more attention than it gets.

About the Producer
Bodega Monastrell is based in Bullas, Murcia, and has built its identity around the grape that gives the winery its name: Monastrell. Its vineyards are worked organically, with a particular focus on expressing the character of the high-altitude vineyards of this small southeastern Spanish denomination.
The winery’s philosophy is closely tied to the landscape and to environmentally responsible viticulture. Chaveo sits among its most important wines and has long been regarded as one of the winery’s flagship expressions of Monastrell. Earlier accounts of the estate already described Chaveo as its flagship wine, produced from Monastrell and matured in French oak.
What makes Bullas particularly interesting is altitude. The denomination is relatively small and contains a significant proportion of old vineyards, giving producers such as Bodega Monastrell the opportunity to make a fresher, more lifted expression of a grape often associated with much heavier Mediterranean reds.
