Description

Finca La Piconada Crianza | DO Rioja, Spain

Finca La Piconada Crianza is an elegant Rioja red wine crafted by Bodegas Diez del Corral in DO Rioja . Made from Tempranillo and Maturana Tinta , it combines the classic red fruit and structure of Tempranillo with the freshness, color and distinctive character of Maturana.

The wine is fermented in stainless steel tanks with a gentle maceration of around 10 days before undergoing a soft lees aging. It is then aged for 12 months in oak barrels , followed by 6 months in bottle , allowing the fruit, spice and oak character to integrate smoothly.

On the nose, Finca La Piconada Crianza shows a complex blend of red fruits, subtle vegetal notes, bakery nuances, cinnamon and vanilla. The palate is delicate and polished, with smooth oak influence, growing intensity and a long, velvety finish.

This is not a heavy Rioja — it is elegant, balanced and quietly expressive, with Maturana adding a more distinctive personality to the classic Crianza style.

About the Producer

Bodegas Diez del Corral is located in the historic village of Anguciana , in the heart of Rioja Alta , just a few kilometers from Haro — often referred to as the cradle of fine Rioja wine. The Diez del Corral family has been linked to winemaking since 1880 , producing traditional “Vinos Finos de Rioja Alta” for generations while preserving the artisanal spirit that still defines the winery today.

What makes Bodegas Diez del Corral particularly distinctive within Rioja is their commitment to recovering and working with minority indigenous grape varieties , especially Maturana Tinta — one of Rioja’s rarest grapes, representing only around 0.2% of the region’s total vineyard plantings . The winery planted its own hectare of Maturana in 2015, using it both in blends and as a monovarietal expression, giving their wines a unique personality and fresher, more vibrant profile.

The vineyards are located in the northwestern part of Rioja Alta, in the historic area known as La Obarenia. This cooler Atlantic-influenced climate, together with limestone-rich soils and rounded stones, creates wines with freshness, elegance and excellent aging potential.

Rather than heavily masking their wines with new oak, the winery prefers longer-used barrels that allow the fruit and terroir to remain at the forefront. Their philosophy combines Rioja tradition with a more contemporary identity — elegant wines with authenticity, freshness and a strong sense of place.
