Description

Rango Monastrell & Syrah | DO Jumilla, Spain

Rango is a rich, expressive Jumilla red with ripe fruit, spice and a lovely smoky touch.

Monastrell and Syrah are a natural combination here. Monastrell brings generous Mediterranean fruit and warmth, while Syrah adds darker fruit, spice and structure. The grapes come from old, high-altitude vineyards, giving the wine plenty of concentration without losing its balance.

The aroma is immediately inviting. Think ripe blackberries and forest fruits, followed by cinnamon, clove and gentle toasted notes. There’s plenty going on, but it still feels warm and approachable rather than overly serious.

On the palate, Rango is full and structured, with ripe fruit, smooth tannins and a savoury, lightly smoky finish. Twelve months in new French and American oak gives it depth and polish while complementing all that generous fruit.

This is exactly the kind of Jumilla red that wants food beside it. Bring out grilled meat, a slow-cooked stew or a good mature cheese and you’re sorted.

A proper Jumilla red with ripe fruit, spice and beautifully integrated oak. Big enough for a steak, but polished enough to enjoy long after dinner is finished.

About the Producer

Bodegas Xenysel is a family winery in Jumilla, and Rango is perhaps the most personal wine in its range.

In fact, the name has nothing to do with the Spanish word for rank or status. “Rango” is the family’s nickname, and the winery says this bottle is the wine that best represents its roots and family history.

The vineyards are an important part of that story. Xenysel works with old Monastrell and Syrah vines in the higher parts of Jumilla, including ungrafted Monastrell – Pie Franco – vines. Trade information for Rango describes vines over 50 years old planted at more than 800 meters.

Rango is also produced from organically grown grapes, keeping the focus firmly on the vineyards and the character of the fruit.

After fermentation, the wine spends 12 months in new French and American oak barrels. The result combines the ripe, generous character we expect from Jumilla with spice, structure and a more polished finish.

It’s a wine with plenty of personality — but perhaps more importantly, it’s a wine with a genuine family story behind it.
