Almoroig Cabernet Franc Edición Única is an extraordinary limited-release red from Celler La Muntanya, made from 100% Cabernet Franc grown high in the Sierra de Mariola in Alicante. The grapes come from a small vineyard in Agres at approximately 800 meters above sea level, beneath the 1,390-meter Montcabrer peak.

The altitude plays an important role in the personality of the wine. Warm Mediterranean days and significantly cooler nights allow Cabernet Franc to develop concentration and aromatic complexity while retaining the freshness and acidity that give the variety its elegance.

Celler La Muntanya produced this wine from the 2016 harvest and gave it an exceptionally long and unusual maturation. The wine first moved into a 2,000-litre French oak foudre before continuing its development in 300-litre French oak barrels. It later returned to the large foudre, where it remained until the winery finally bottled it in mid-2023.

Interestingly, the winery had not originally planned this as a special release. When the team tasted the wine again in early 2023, they discovered how beautifully it had developed. They submitted it to blind tastings with wine professionals and enthusiast groups, and the positive response convinced them to bottle it as an Edición Única.

In the glass, Almoroig Cabernet Franc shows mature red fruit, compote and dried plum alongside violet, black pepper and elegant toasted notes. The palate remains remarkably fresh despite its long maturation, with balsamic character, integrated tannins and a persistent finish that carries the fruit, spice and oak beautifully.

This is not an everyday Cabernet Franc. It is a fascinating, mature Mediterranean interpretation of the variety, shaped by altitude, an exceptional length of ageing and the individual philosophy of one of Alicante’s most distinctive small producers.

About the Producer

Celler La Muntanya is based in Muro de Alcoy, Alicante, and has built its identity around preserving the viticultural heritage and extraordinary diversity of the mountainous inland areas of Alicante and Valencia.

Rather than focusing only on conventional vineyard holdings, the project works with small plots and growers across the surrounding landscape. Its Almoroig range explores individual grape varieties and distinctive vineyard sites, including both familiar international grapes and traditional local varieties.

The range is particularly diverse. Alongside Cabernet Franc, Celler La Muntanya produces Almoroig wines from varieties including Monastrell, Garnacha Tintorera, Syrah, Petit Verdot and Graciano, as well as a fascinating collection of white varieties.

The Cabernet Franc used for this special edition grows in Agres, high in the Sierra de Mariola at 800 meters above sea level. The small scale of the vineyard requires careful manual work and gives Celler La Muntanya the opportunity to select the fruit closely.

Almoroig Cabernet Franc Edición Única shows the more experimental side of the winery. Its exceptionally long development in French oak wasn’t simply about producing a heavily aged wine. Instead, patience transformed the Cabernet Franc into something the winery itself considered sufficiently distinctive to bottle as a unique edition.
