Description

Altos de Valdoso Roble | DO Ribera del Duero, Spain

Altos de Valdoso Roble is a fresh, fruit-driven Ribera del Duero with just enough oak to give it extra depth without hiding the fruit.

Made from 100% Tinta Fina, the local name for Tempranillo, it comes from exceptionally high vineyards. The estate sits at around 1,000 meters above sea level, where the cooler conditions help the grapes retain freshness and give the wine a lively character.

In the glass, expect plenty of ripe blackberry and dark fruit, joined by aromatic herbs and a gentle touch of oak. The palate is juicy and smooth, with good depth, refined texture and a fresh finish.

The wine spends 6 months in American oak barrels, followed by further ageing in bottle. The result is a Roble where the fruit remains firmly in charge and the oak sits quietly in the background.

Easy to enjoy but with enough structure for the dinner table, this is a lovely introduction to the fresher side of Ribera del Duero.

💎 Why We Love It

A Ribera del Duero that doesn’t rely on lots of oak to make an impression. The high-altitude fruit gives it freshness and character, while the short barrel ageing adds just enough depth.

About the Producer

Bodegas Altos de Valdoso is part of Grupo Bodegas Olarra, with its Ribera del Duero project centred on a remarkable high-altitude vineyard estate.

The property comprises around 138 hectares of Tinto Fino vineyards, divided across numerous parcels and situated at exceptionally high elevations. The producer describes all of its vineyards as being at or above 2,750 feet, with the highest sites reaching approximately 1,000 meters above sea level.

This extreme location is central to the Altos de Valdoso style. Cooler temperatures and the significant difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures allow the grapes to ripen while retaining freshness.

For the Roble, the winery selects fruit from its younger vines, allowing the natural fruit character of Tinto Fino to take centre stage. The short period in oak then adds structure and complexity without turning it into a heavily wooded Ribera.

Altos de Valdoso forms part of Grupo Bodegas Olarra, the Spanish wine group whose history began in Rioja in 1973 and which today produces wines across several Spanish regions.
