Description

Ana de Altún | DO Rioja, Spain

Rioja may be famous for red wine, but Ana de Altún is a lovely reminder that the region can produce seriously good whites too.

Made from Viura and Malvasía, this wine comes from old hillside vineyards in Baños de Ebro, Rioja Alavesa. The vines are between 30 and 60 years old and were originally planted by the grandparents of brothers Iker and Alberto Martínez Pangua.

In the glass, Ana de Altún is richer and more rounded than a simple fresh white Rioja. You’ll find pineapple and citrus fruit, together with a subtle hint of freshly baked bread. There’s plenty of fruit on the palate, but also a lovely smoothness and body that makes it particularly good with food.

The wine spends a little time in French oak and then rests on its lees. Rather than making it taste heavily oaked, this gives it extra texture and depth while allowing the fruit to remain at the centre.

And there’s a lovely family story behind the name. Iker and Alberto created Ana de Altún in honour of their mother, Ana, using vineyards planted by their grandparents. So this really is a wine built around several generations of the same family.

About the Producer

Bodegas Altún is a family winery in Baños de Ebro, in the heart of Rioja Alavesa. José Antonio Martínez founded the winery in 1989 with the ambition of making wines from the family’s own vineyards. Today, his sons Iker and Alberto continue the family’s work.

The brothers focus on the vineyards and the character of their home village. Ana de Altún is a perfect example. Its grapes come from 15 small hillside plots, where old vines produce fruit with plenty of flavour and personality.

Ana de Altún is also a very personal wine for the family. It connects vineyards planted by their grandparents with a wine named after their mother, Ana – a lovely expression of several generations of the Altún story.
