Capricho Godello | DO Bierzo, Spain

Capricho is one of those white wines that makes Godello very easy to fall in love with. Fresh and fruity, but with enough texture and character to make it far more interesting than a simple everyday white.

Made predominantly from Godello with a small amount of Doña Blanca, the grapes come from vineyards in Bierzo, in north-western Spain. Here, the combination of altitude, sandy soils and a climate influenced by both the Atlantic and continental Spain helps the grapes retain freshness while developing beautifully ripe fruit.

The wine is made in stainless steel to keep that lovely fresh character, followed by a short period resting on its lees. And that little bit of extra time makes a difference: instead of being simply crisp and fruity, Capricho has a slightly fuller, smoother feel in the mouth.

Expect juicy pear, peach and apple, a touch of citrus and delicate white flowers. It is fresh enough to drink on its own, but there is enough body and flavour here to make it a brilliant food wine too.

If you normally reach for Sauvignon Blanc or Albariño and fancy trying something different, this is a very good place to start with Godello.

About the Producer

Bodegas y Viñedos Gancedo is a family winery in Arganza, Bierzo, working with some of the region’s most important native varieties, including Godello, Doña Blanca and Mencía.

Their vineyards sit at considerable altitude, with parcels spread through different parts of Bierzo. The winery combines traditional vineyard work with modern winemaking, concentrating on allowing the character of the grapes and the landscape to come through in the finished wines.

Alongside younger vineyards, Gancedo also works with old vines, some between 60 and 100 years old. Their approach is deliberately hands-on in the vineyard, with relatively low yields and careful management of individual sites.

Capricho is a great example of that philosophy in a very approachable form: distinctly Bierzo, full of character, but made to be enjoyed rather than analysed.
