Description
Les Basses Gironet | DO Alicante, Spain
Forget everything you think you know about powerful, heavy Mediterranean reds. Les Basses Gironet offers something wonderfully different: a fresh, elegant and beautifully expressive red from the coastal vineyards of Teulada, in Alicante’s Marina Alta.
Made from 100% Gironet, the traditional local name for Garnacha Tinta, this wine celebrates the character of its Mediterranean home. Limestone-rich soils, warm sunshine and refreshing sea breezes help shape its distinctive personality.
Expect juicy red cherries, raspberries and wild strawberries, with delicate violet aromas and a touch of Mediterranean herbs. The palate is lively and silky, with gentle tannins and lovely freshness.
Rather than using oak barrels, Les Basses ages this wine for six months in traditional clay amphorae. This allows the fruit and floral aromas to shine while adding subtle texture and depth, without heavy oak flavours.
Try serving it slightly cooler than your usual red wine. Its freshness makes it a wonderful choice for warm Mediterranean evenings, relaxed lunches and sharing good food with friends.
A local wine with a genuine sense of place — and a delicious reminder that Mediterranean reds don’t have to be big and powerful to be interesting.

💎 Why We Love It
Because this is exactly what discovering local wine should be about.
A traditional grape, grown close to the Mediterranean, made into something fresh, floral and completely different from the big, powerful reds people often expect from Spain.
We particularly love the use of clay amphorae instead of oak. It allows the Gironet grape to express itself without distraction.
A beautiful little discovery from practically our doorstep.
About the Producer
Celler Les Basses is a small wine project based in Teulada, in Alicante’s Marina Alta.
Led by José María Bolufer, David Carbonell and Regino Ballester, the project focuses on preserving traditional local grape varieties and the winemaking heritage of this Mediterranean region.
Working with vineyards influenced by the nearby sea, the team favours minimal intervention and traditional methods, including fermentation with native yeasts and ageing in clay amphorae.
Their wines celebrate the authentic character of La Marina Alta, bringing a fresh perspective to Alicante’s winemaking traditions.
