Salto del Usero is a wonderfully vibrant 100% Monastrell from Bodega Monastrell, made high in the hills of Bullas from organically grown old vines in the beautiful Valle del Aceniche.

If your idea of Monastrell is big, heavy and almost jammy, this wine may surprise you. The vineyards sit at around 850–900 metres above sea level, where the cooler conditions help the grapes retain freshness while still developing the ripe, generous fruit that makes Monastrell so appealing. The vines are dry-farmed and bush-trained, with some more than 40 years old.

The result is packed with juicy red and dark fruit, Mediterranean herbs and a lovely touch of white pepper. There’s plenty of flavour, but the wine remains fresh and lively rather than heavy. Smooth, juicy and wonderfully drinkable, it is the sort of red that works just as well with a plate of charcuterie as it does with a proper Sunday roast.

And the name? Salto del Usero comes from one of Bullas’ best-known natural landmarks, a beautiful waterfall and bathing pool carved into the rock by the River Mula. It gives this very local wine an equally local identity.

About the Producer

Bodega Monastrell is the personal project of Alfonso and Mavi, both originally from Bullas and from families with a long agricultural tradition in the region. From the beginning, their philosophy has centred on organic viticulture, sustainability and making wines that genuinely reflect their vineyards rather than manipulating them into a particular style.

Their vineyards are located in the Valle del Aceniche, between Bullas and Cehegín, at around 850 metres above sea level. This high-altitude setting is particularly important: the cooler conditions allow the grapes to ripen slowly while maintaining natural freshness and acidity.

Unsurprisingly, Monastrell is at the heart of the winery. Rather than making overly powerful Mediterranean reds, Bodega Monastrell uses the altitude, old vineyards and organic farming to show a fresher and more elegant side of the grape. Salto del Usero is a great introduction to their style.
