Description

Salinas 1237 | DO Alicante, Spain

Salinas 1237 is a big, rich and beautifully mature Alicante red, made for those occasions when you want something a little special.

The nose is packed with ripe red and dark fruit, followed by hints of liquorice, spice and Mediterranean herbs. As it opens in the glass, softer notes of toffee and dark chocolate begin to appear.

On the palate, it is powerful but surprisingly smooth. There’s plenty of ripe fruit, together with silky tannins and a creamy texture. A fresh mineral touch keeps all that richness nicely balanced.

The long ageing in new French oak adds depth and warmth, but this is still a wine where the fruit has plenty to say. The finish is long, rounded and persistent.

This is definitely a bottle to take your time with. Open it with a good steak, slow-cooked lamb or a rich stew and let it breathe for a while. At ten years old, the 2015 is showing the kind of mature complexity that makes you want to sit down and properly enjoy it.

And the name? 1237 refers to the highest point of the Sierra de Salinas, at 1,237 meters.

A seriously impressive Alicante red that’s rich and powerful without losing its elegance. Give it time in the glass and there is plenty to discover.

About the Producer

Bodegas Sierra Salinas sits between the Sierra de Salinas and Sierra de la Teja, close to Villena in inland Alicante.

The winery was created by the Castaño family and opened in 2006 after several years of developing the estate. Today it forms part of the MGWines group.

The vineyards lie at high altitude on poor, stony limestone soils. These conditions suit Mediterranean varieties particularly well and help the grapes develop plenty of flavour while retaining freshness.

Salinas 1237 sits at the very top of the winery’s range. Production is tiny, and the wine uses carefully selected fruit from some of the estate’s best and oldest vineyard parcels.

The name comes directly from the landscape. At 1,237 meters, the summit of the Sierra de Salinas towers above the vineyards and gives the wine its distinctive name.

This is Sierra Salinas showing what Alicante can do at the more ambitious end of the scale: ripe Mediterranean fruit, serious structure, long ageing and plenty of personality.
