Description
Calzás Pie Franco | DO Jumilla, Spain
Calzás is Monastrell in its purest and most powerful form — ripe, deep and full of Mediterranean character.
It comes from Las Calzás, a single high-altitude vineyard planted with old Monastrell vines on their own roots. At around 850 meters, the vines grow in sandy, stony soils and produce small quantities of concentrated fruit.
The nose is generous and immediately inviting. Ripe dark fruit and black cherry meet toasted notes, gentle smoke and warm spice. There’s plenty of intensity, but it doesn’t feel clumsy or overly sweet.
In the mouth, Calzás is powerful and structured, with ripe fruit, firm but polished tannins and a long savoury finish. Twelve months in new French oak adds depth, toast and smoky complexity while allowing the Monastrell to remain firmly in charge.
This is not a shy red. Give it a large glass, some time to open and something substantial on the plate.

About the Producer
Bodegas Xenysel is a family winery based in the Hoya de Torres Valley in Jumilla, where Monastrell is very much the star.
The winery works organically and describes both its vineyard and cellar work as manual and traditional. Its range is now 100% organic and vegan, with a particular focus on preserving and showcasing the old Monastrell vineyards of the valley.
And Calzás has one of the best vineyard stories in the range.
The wine takes its name from the Las Calzás parcel. The vineyard lies at around 850 meters, and the steep terrain was traditionally supported with stone walls to help control erosion caused by rainwater — hence the name Calzás.
Most importantly, these are Pie Franco vines.
That means the Monastrell grows on its own original roots rather than being grafted onto American rootstock. Such vineyards are increasingly rare in Europe, and preserving them gives Calzás a particularly strong connection to the old viticultural landscape of Jumilla.
The combination of old vines, altitude and sandy, stony soils produces concentrated fruit while helping retain freshness. Xenysel then gives the wine 12 months in new French oak, building structure and complexity around that powerful Monastrell fruit.
It’s a bottle for someone who wants to discover what serious Monastrell can really do.
