Description

L’Alba del Mar Chardonnay | DO Alicante, Spain

L’Alba del Mar is an expressive Mediterranean Chardonnay from Bodegas Faelo, produced from the winery’s own vineyards in the countryside around Elche in DO Alicante. Fresh, aromatic and beautifully rounded, it combines ripe white and tropical fruit with lively acidity and a subtle creamy character.

The Chardonnay grapes are harvested entirely by hand in 15 kg boxes at the very beginning of the day. The name L’Alba del Mar refers to this early-morning harvest — picking at dawn allows the grapes to arrive at the winery while still cool, helping preserve their natural freshness, aromas and flavours.

Fermentation takes place at a low, controlled temperature in 4,000-litre stainless-steel tanks using selected yeasts, with the aim of capturing the aromatic potential of the Chardonnay grape. Following filtration and bottling, the wine rests in bottle for between 3 and 6 months before release.

On the nose, L’Alba del Mar offers an attractive combination of fresh apple, apricot and pear alongside tropical notes of pineapple and mango, with a subtle vanilla character underneath. The palate is dry, smooth and creamy, balanced by lively acidity and generous fruit, leading to a fresh and persistent finish.

This is a distinctive Alicante Chardonnay with plenty of Mediterranean personality — aromatic and generous enough to enjoy on its own, yet fresh and balanced enough to make an excellent food wine.

About the Producer

Bodegas Faelo is a small family winery located in Matola, in the countryside of Elche, Alicante. Officially founded in 2000, the winery continues a family winemaking tradition stretching back several generations and today remains closely connected to the traditional viticulture of the Camp d’Elx.

The winery owns approximately three hectares of vineyards divided between three plots in Matola, Crevillente and at the winery itself. The vineyards are planted on sandy-limestone soils under a Mediterranean climate. The varieties include Monastrell, Moscatel de Alejandría, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Syrah and Chardonnay.

Vineyard work, including pruning, green pruning and harvesting, is carried out manually. Faelo follows a natural approach to vineyard management, limiting the use of artificial fungicides and pesticides wherever possible and planting aromatic herbs such as rosemary, lavender, sage and thyme amongst the vineyards to encourage a more balanced natural environment.

Since 2012, Bodegas Faelo is a part of DO Alicante. Production remains deliberately small, with only selected wines bottled and each release produced in limited quantities.

L’Alba del Mar perfectly represents this philosophy — a handcrafted Chardonnay harvested at dawn to preserve freshness and produced in a limited quantity of approximately 4,000 bottles.
