Description
Matas Altas | DO Jumilla, Spain
Organic
Matas Altas is Monastrell with freshness at its heart. It has the ripe Mediterranean fruit you expect from Jumilla, but it feels wonderfully lively, savoury and refined.
The wine comes from old Pie Franco vineyards around Fuente-Álamo. These ungrafted vines grow high above the warmer plains, rooted in limestone-rich soils with sand, gravel and marl.
In the glass, expect raspberry and ripe strawberry alongside darker fruit, Mediterranean herbs and a touch of orange peel. Peppery spice and a gentle earthy character give it another layer without taking anything away from the fruit.
The palate is juicy and beautifully fresh. Fine tannins give just enough grip, while lively acidity and a distinctly stony character keep the wine energetic. The ageing takes place in large foudres and used vessels rather than lots of new oak, so the fruit and vineyard remain firmly in charge.
This is serious Monastrell without the heaviness. Give it a slight chill, put something delicious on the table and let the wine do the rest.

About the Producer
Bodega Cerrón is a family winery in Fuente-Álamo, on the Albacete side of DOP Jumilla. Today, the fourth generation of the Cerdán family is behind the project, with a strong focus on recovering old vineyards and showing a fresher, more precise side of this Mediterranean landscape.
Their Stratum Wines project takes that philosophy even further.
Rather than building wines around extraction and oak, the focus is on the vineyard — particularly the remarkable old Pie Franco vines that have survived in this high, dry part of Jumilla.
Matas Altas comes from several old vineyard sites around Fuente-Álamo. The vines sit between 850 and 940 meters, where warm Mediterranean days are balanced by considerably cooler nights. The soils are dominated by limestone in different forms, alongside sand, gravel and marl.
Many of these vineyards are 50–80 years old and ungrafted, an increasingly rare piece of Spain’s viticultural heritage.
The winemaking follows the same restrained philosophy. Grapes are harvested by hand and fermentation occurs naturally with indigenous yeasts. The 2023 then spends 11 months in large wooden vessels, allowing the wine to develop without covering the character of the old vineyards with obvious oak.
The result is a style of Jumilla that may surprise anyone expecting something huge and powerful: ripe enough to be unmistakably Mediterranean, but fresh, agile and beautifully drinkable.
