Description
Messeguera | DO Alicante, Spain
Messeguera is a very special white from Finca Collado, made from 100% Merseguera, one of the historic white grapes of Alicante. Once widely planted across the Vinalopó valleys, today it is far less common — which makes this wine particularly interesting.
The grapes come from a single one-hectare vineyard in Biar, planted with vines around 40 years old. The vineyard has stony, sandy and limestone-rich soils, while the dry conditions suit Merseguera particularly well.
This isn’t made as a simple, light white. The grapes spend time with their skins before fermentation, adding extra flavour and texture. The wine is then aged for 9 months in large 700-litre barrels on its lees. This gives it richness without covering up the character of the grape.
Expect orange, stone fruit and quince, followed by softer notes of honey and coconut. The palate is rounded and elegant, with good freshness and a subtle bitter note on the finish. It’s complex enough to enjoy slowly and has enough personality to work brilliantly with food.
If you’ve never tried Merseguera before, this is a fantastic place to start. It’s also a lovely reminder that Alicante has much more to offer than Monastrell.

💎 Why We Love It
A rare chance to discover Merseguera with real depth and personality. It’s local, unusual and a brilliant example of the lesser-known grapes Alicante does so well.
About the Producer
Finca Collado is based in Salinas, Alicante, in the Alto Vinalopó. The winery works with varieties that reflect the area’s history and landscape, including Monastrell, Bobal and Merseguera.
What makes the project particularly interesting is its focus on vineyards and varieties with a strong connection to this part of Alicante. Rather than simply making familiar commercial styles, Finca Collado explores what grapes such as Merseguera can achieve when given more attention.
Messeguera is a perfect example. The winery sees Merseguera as a historic local variety with much more potential than it is normally given. By using old vines, a single vineyard and careful ageing, they have turned it into a serious and distinctive Mediterranean white.
