Mr Jenares Verdejo | DO Jumilla, Spain

Mr Jenares Verdejo is a fresh, lively white that shows a completely different side of Verdejo. Rather than coming from Rueda, its traditional home, these grapes are grown in the warm, sunny landscape of Jumilla by Bodegas Delampa.

It’s exactly the sort of uncomplicated white you want waiting in the fridge. Expect plenty of fresh white fruit, citrus and delicate floral aromas, together with the subtle herbal and fennel notes that are so typical of Verdejo.

The wine is kept on its fine lees, which gives it a little extra texture without taking away from its freshness. The palate remains bright and juicy, with lively acidity and a clean, refreshing finish.

This is a great aperitif, but it’s even better when there is seafood on the table. Easy, fresh and full of character, it’s a bottle that doesn’t need a special occasion.

About the Producer

Bodegas Delampa is a family winery in Jumilla, Murcia, with roots in the region stretching back to 1921. Today, the winery produces a broad range of wines that mix Jumilla tradition with a much more playful and approachable style.

You’ll see that immediately with the Mr Jenares range. The colourful labels and slightly cheeky personality are a long way from traditional Spanish wine presentation. However, what’s inside the bottle is taken seriously.

Delampa works with both local and international grape varieties. Its range includes Monastrell alongside Verdejo, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah and Petit Verdot. Mr Jenares Verdejo is a particularly interesting example because it takes a grape strongly associated with central Spain and gives it a distinctly Jumilla personality.
