Description
La Piconada Blanco | DO Rioja, Spain
La Piconada Blanco is a Rioja white for anyone who likes their white wine with a little more personality. Made from Chardonnay and Tempranillo Blanco by the family-run Bodegas Díez del Corral, it combines ripe, expressive fruit with creamy texture, subtle oak and plenty of freshness.
The two grape varieties are harvested by hand and made separately. Chardonnay completes its fermentation in French oak barrels and foudres, while Tempranillo Blanco is fermented in gently toasted American oak barrels. Both then spend 7 months ageing on their fine lees, giving the wine its lovely rounded, silky character.
And although there is oak involved, this isn’t a heavy, old-fashioned white Rioja. You’ll find mango, peach, ripe pineapple, pear and citrus, followed by softer notes of vanilla, biscuit and a little pastry. The palate is generous and creamy, but lively acidity keeps everything beautifully fresh.
This is a great bottle for someone who usually drinks Chardonnay and wants to discover something different from Spain — or for anyone who thinks Rioja is only about red wine.

About the Producer
Bodegas Díez del Corral is a small family winery in Anguciana, Rioja Alta, just a few kilometres from Haro. Although the current winery project is relatively young, the Díez del Corral family’s connection with winemaking in the village can be traced back to 1880.
The modern project grew from a family tradition into something more ambitious, with the family deciding to create wines that combine the classic finesse of Rioja Alta with a more individual approach. Their wines are bottled under the La Piconada name, and alongside traditional Rioja grapes they have taken a particular interest in lesser-used varieties such as Maturana Tinta and Tempranillo Blanco.
The result is a small range of wines that feels unmistakably Rioja but isn’t afraid to do things differently. La Piconada Blanco is a perfect example — combining Tempranillo Blanco with Chardonnay and using two different styles of oak to create a white with both freshness and character.
