El Gordo del Circo is a wonderfully expressive 100% Verdejo from Casa Rojo, produced in the heart of DO Rueda. Behind the playful circus label is a surprisingly serious white, with plenty of freshness, texture and character.

The grapes come from organically farmed vineyards in Olmedo, Valdestillas and Segovia, planted on gravelly and sandy soils. These conditions suit Verdejo particularly well and help produce wines with aromatic intensity while retaining their natural freshness.

After harvest, the grapes undergo a 24-hour cold maceration. Fermentation takes place at low temperature using only the free-run must, helping to preserve and enhance Verdejo’s aromatic character. The wine then spends several months on its fine lees, giving it considerably more body and texture than a simple young Verdejo.

Expect fresh white and stone fruit, citrus and herbal notes, with the classic Verdejo hints of fennel and freshly cut grass. Lees ageing adds a softer, rounder texture to the palate while bright acidity keeps everything fresh and lively.

This is a Verdejo with a little more substance. It’s aromatic and refreshing enough for an aperitif, but the extra texture makes it an excellent wine for the table too.

About the Producer

Casa Rojo takes a rather different approach to Spanish wine. Instead of concentrating solely on one region, the project works across several of Spain’s wine regions, creating individual wines designed to express a particular grape and its place of origin.

For El Gordo del Circo, that combination is Verdejo and Rueda. The project uses organically farmed vineyards in Castilla y León, with the wine made to highlight both Verdejo’s naturally aromatic personality and the additional texture that comes from ageing on fine lees.

The distinctive circus-inspired bottle may be the first thing you notice, but the wine itself is far from a novelty. It is a modern, characterful expression of one of Spain’s most important native white varieties.
