Description

Salicornio Moscatel | DO Alicante, Spain

Salicornio Moscatel is anything but a typical Moscatel. Produced by Casa Balaguer–Vinessens, this dry white wine captures the salty Mediterranean landscape that surrounds Alicante’s coastline. Its name comes from Salicornia, a coastal plant that grows naturally in salty marshes and perfectly reflects the wine’s distinctive mineral character.

Made from 100% Moscatel de Alejandría, the grapes are grown in vineyards planted almost at sea level, where the Mediterranean breeze plays a key role in preserving freshness. After harvest, the grapes remain in contact with their skins for five to seven days, extracting extra texture and aromatic complexity before ageing for several months in small concrete tanks. Concrete allows the wine to mature gently while preserving the purity of the fruit and the identity of the vineyard.

The nose is expressive and elegant, offering aromas of orange blossom, citrus peel, white flowers and Mediterranean herbs. The palate is dry, textured and remarkably fresh, combining floral notes with a subtle saline character that lingers on the finish. Despite the skin contact, the wine remains refined and beautifully balanced. Unfiltered and unclarified.

Salicornio is a wine for those who enjoy discovering something different. It is unmistakably Mediterranean, combining freshness, texture and minerality in a style that is both modern and deeply rooted in Alicante’s winemaking traditions.

💎 Why We Love It

Salicornio is a completely different expression of Moscatel. Rather than being sweet and perfumed, it is dry, savoury and wonderfully Mediterranean. The skin contact adds texture, while the concrete ageing keeps the wine fresh, pure and incredibly food-friendly.

About the Producer

Casa Balaguer–Vinessens was founded by Andrés Carull and Marta Ribera, two third-generation winegrowers whose goal has always been to produce wines that express the authentic landscape of Alicante. Working exclusively with organically farmed vineyards, they favour native grape varieties, spontaneous fermentations and low-intervention winemaking to allow each vineyard to speak for itself.

Their philosophy is based on respecting nature rather than controlling it. Concrete tanks, native yeasts and gentle extraction are chosen because they preserve freshness and terroir instead of adding external flavours. Today, Casa Balaguer–Vinessens is recognised as one of the leading producers of contemporary Mediterranean wines, combining tradition with a clear sense of place.
